[NB this report concerns Minecraft Apple TV Edition v.1.0.0 only]

When the game is launched, it displays a menu with "Play", "Settings" and "Store" buttons, and plays background music and panning landscape background image.

Clicking the "Play" button causes the UI to become unresponsive (no response to any buttons on Siri Remote or MFi controller). BGM continues playing but background animation freezes. In some cases, after a long (>1 minute) delay, a world selection screen appears, but this is also unresponsive, and the background animation remains frozen. Once the background music track finishes, it does not restart.

Steps to reproduce: this behavior always happens on my configuration (64GB Apple TV, SteelSeries Stratus MFi controller with latest firmware as of 5 Jan 2017).
