A minimum of four Dark Oak Saplings are required to grow one Dark Oak Tree. Not enough Dark Oak Saplings are produced by decaying leaves to propagate Dark Oaks. This is possibly because the number of spawned mobs was decreased for Dark Oak Leaves *AND* the stick spawning was introduced. This probably threw off the expected number of dark oak saplings spawned.
