[1.15.2] General dedicated server performance issues

So, I am running a server on a dedicated machine which currently host around 13 players and I get a lot of performance issue on the server even with sufficient resources (8GB RAM, 8 CPU cores..).

      • Server resources are not overloaded.
      • It is not a network issue on the server end.
      • People are not creating mob farms or doing anything that could explain the lag except  generating chunks while moving.
      • A server with less than 8 players is running fine.

Console is showing the server as overloaded:

[17:59:52] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded? Running 16430ms or 328 ticks behind
[18:00:25] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded? Running 18243ms or 364 ticks behind
[18:00:57] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded? Running 16869ms or 337 ticks behind
[18:01:31] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded? Running 19508ms or 390 ticks behind

Ok, so the issues we are expriencing are server performance related, it's like the server is struggling to compute everything that's going on when there is over 10 players on it.

It not a resource issue since the server has 8 CPU cores and 8GB of memory and both are not overloaded.

It's not a networking issue since I'm in the same network as the host and it should be able to have a bandwidth of 1Gb/s.

It's not my game that has poor performance, I'm running at around 221 fps.

Here are some examples of what is going on:

          • Mobs move and turn slowly,
          • Blocks take over 2 seconds to drop when broken
          • Ghasts and projectiles kind of rollback while moving (no player rollback)
          • When drinking potions it takes so long that the animation end before the effect appear

Please provide more details about the performance issues you are experiencing. As of 1.15, Mojang has requested that each performance-related report target a specific issue, instead of a generic "My performance is poor in-game". Examples of such issues include: MC-147548, MC-164123.
