The name for the Waxed Lightly-Weathered Cut Copper Stairs is too long to rename in an anvil.

That is true. Probably best to keep this ticket open in that case.

It might have been fixed for copper blocks (as their names got shortened), but 35 characters is still too low for other names in other languages, so the core issue here (anvil char limit being too low) hasn't been fixed yet.

This issue has been fixed in 21w05a as the names of these blocks have been changed.

@Marty McFly Using the block state method would be really complicated because you are meant to be able to obtain it in item form. They would have to change a lot of things to get items to remember their block states.

The ideal fix would be increasing the anvil character limit, the issue here is that the anvil limit is too short. Shortening the copper block names wouldn't fix this issue as many languages have names that are longer than 35 characters and often there's no real way to shorten those.

We need anvil really long character limit instead.

          "Lightly Weathered" a bit limited.

Minecrafter did really mistake at all

Blockstates or not, the character limit should be increased. 35 characters aren't enough for many.

          That's my proposal.

Perhaps Waxed copper could be a blockstate. This would reduce inventory clutter and shorten the names. I do not know how the Persistent blockstate works for leaves, but I assume it just prevents them from being ticked. In that case MC-203591 would have to verify that Copper is supposed to be ticked at all. Then it would be a simple matter of rewaxing copper blocks after they are picked up (which could be done by right clicking rather than crafting).
