I expected villagers to remain in their beds at night. 

Villagers drifted while sleeping, some taking a minute to return in the morning when "snapped back."

At night I noticed something flying over my head. I tracked it down to my villagers sliding off their beds, sometimes flying a "mile" away. I THINK all of the villagers come back, but it's hard to tell. They float through glass and other block. 

I expect nothing to happen if I walk over a sleeping villager. 
What does happen is that I kick them and they slide like a hokey puck.
