The new launcher (tarball) is only a Linux executable, and thus not usable on BSD or other platforms.
By removing support for the legacy java launcher (Minecraft.jar), all other platforms than (Windows, macOS, Linux) are ruled out until binary support or source code release.
Third party launchers can still support mc, but officially it "won't be available", (due to adding ms accounts?)
