"Minecraft Launcher" launches correctly that I can see.

Selecting "Latest release of 1.17" and select "Play"

  note: when I updated to 1.17, it deleted the previous version, unknown what version #.

The preparing bar on the bottom starts showing status and completes.

"Minecraft Launcher" window disappears.

New Window:

     Java Virtual Machine Launcher

     ERROR; Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.

     ERROR: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

I select "OK"

Window disappears.

"Minecraft Launcher" window re-appears, with overlaying window-

Game crashed

An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed.

We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Exit Code:  0

I select "Close"

And the "Minecraft Launcher" window is now bright and accessible.

But hitting "Play" repeats all the above.

I did update my JAVA,   build 1.8.0_101-b13

but it did not help.
