Dolphins require both air and water to survive.

However, when the player gets too far away, the dolphin AI turns off and it freezes in place, but whatever timers track dolphins' air and water exposure continue counting.

This results in dolphins drowning themselves if they are loaded in, but the player is too far away for the AI to activate.

This is demonstrated by Grian in this video.
