For some reason a world run on a mac lags terribly when the player loads a chunk with about 100 spawners. The spawners are a mix of block and minecart spawners but run fine in single player and PC direct connect. The spawners will sit there and dont spawn anything until a button is pressed. The spawner search radius is the max of a short variable however. The three pinpoints could be search range, spawner minecarts, or spawners in general. The server is run with 2GB RAM on a mac and any other world runs fine. Not sure about Mac SSP.

Should I change that and test again? If so how do I change that?

As far as I know its a clean install of mac OS, clean java install, and no server mods or anything. I haven't touched java or lowered the setting at all.

What reason do you have to reduce the default setting of JVM memory ?
(Of course does it matter, Minecraft won't run with too less memory - as you can see.)

Why do you run the game without assigning any memory to the JVM ?

That way you have 64M (AFAIK) instead of the default 1GB
