Can't place mushrooms

What I expected to happen was...:
I made a enclosed 3x3x3 area with a light level of 0 and I was going to place mushrooms as usual.

What actually happened was...:
I right clicked on the block and the mushroom disappeared from my inventory and nothing was placed. I then right clicked again and it popped back into my inventory and I could never place the mushroom.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make a dark area
2. Right click a ground block in the dark area with a mushroom in hand
3. ...
