When using "/give @p stick" in a command block, the player is given a checkered image. To reproduce, get a command block, type in the command above, and then activate the command block. Voila! You have yourself a broken image! These also cannot be used to craft any items. In addition, these items don't stack with regular sticks from the creative inventory. Finally, if there are any other sticks in your inventory, it will correct the image, but still seem like it is broken when entering your inventory. Could possibly be a dupe of MC-50998 but I thought I would share this anyway, as MC-50998 talks specifically about blocks and going from 1.7 to 14w31a, whereas this talks about 14w31a itself. Do what you will.
