Hoppers appear black on the inside when blocks are placed around it.

      To recreate:
      1)Place down a hopper
2)Black blocks all around it (Like in immage)

Heh, at first I thought hoppers did this when powered, to indicate that they aren't accepting items. Then I realized it was just unfortunately a bug.

Confirmed for 13w04a. It appears that the interior of the hopper is drawn using the light level from the block to the east (+x) — if I box in a hopper and put an upper-slab above it (to block the ambient light but let me see) and a torch to the east, the interior of the hopper appears brightly lit.

confirmed, I like the idea that it is black when it's completely surrounded by blocks, it makes the hopper look like a very deep hole.

Confirmed. Only the block east of the hopper makes it appear black.
