When giving yourself a golden apple with the /give command you'll receive a golden apple. But when doing /give [player] minecraft:golden_apple:2 or higher than 2 you'll be given the Notch apple except it'll have the WIP texture. You can still eat it and it acts as normal but the texture bugs out due to the metadata that's given.
