Items would despawn if nobody was in the spawn chunks and iron farms would still work.
What actually happened was...:

The items stayed in the spawn chunks and didn't despawn and my iron farm broke.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. I threw items on the ground and went into the nether for five mins and came back and the items were still there.
2. I tried it on my survival server by throwing items on the ground and logging out for five mins and the items were still there.
3. Then I tried it for longer periods of time and came back with the same results.
