      Background

I had a previous launcher which worked a couple months ago, but I uninstalled it recently upon seeing the message that it was no longer supported (so I unfortunately don't have the version information to provide). After uninstalling the previous launcher, I installed the Minecraft Launcher from the Windows Store, and I began experiencing the issue.

      Issue Description

The behavior is similar to MCL-16888: I install the launcher without any issues, but when I run the launcher the progress bar for the launcher updater stops at the same point about 90% of the way through and stays there until I get the 'unable to update native launcher' message. However, my ~/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/launcher_log.txt consistently mentions the same failure, which is different from the launcher_log.txt output in that issue. I also want to create a new issue in order to provide more information and a list of steps I've taken to fix it, none of which have worked thus far.

I've attached two copies of launcher_log.txt from different attempts to install Minecraft. You can see in both that the failure coincides with an error message of the form

[Error: DATE TIME: PistonUpdate.cpp(809)] Download of https://launcher.mojang.com/v1/objects/.../snapshot_blob.bin failed.

Strangely, I can download that file in my browser without issue.

I'm also fairly sure the issue has something to do with the configuration of this device (as opposed to, e.g., router configuration), as I have been able to install Minecraft on another computer (Windows 11). However, the device I'm experiencing this issue on is my preferred device for playing Minecraft, so I've been trying to fix it.

Additionally, no files are written to .minecraft except the launcher_log.txt.

      Attempted Fixes

I first tried all the described fixes on the Minecraft Launcher Troubleshooting FAQ page. I'll still list them below, however, as I've tried a number of different things at different times, repeatedly, in case some combination would fix the issue. I also haven't been documenting exact things I've done, let alone the order I've tried things in, so the following is just an unordered list of what I can remember having done.

      • Try different launcher installers
        • Windows Store installation
        • Windows 10/11 Installer from the website
        • Windows 7/8 Installer from the website (this launcher failed due to a missing launcher.dll)
        • Xbox App installation
      • Reset (and repair, when possible) apps and services (unless specified, via "Add or remove programs")
        • Minecraft Launcher
        • Windows Store (via "Add or remove programs" -> "Advanced")
        • Windows Store (via wsreset.exe)
        • Xbox app
        • Gaming services
        • Xbox Live app
      • Modify Security and Permissions
        • Turn off Windows Firewall (my only firewall) and reputation-based protection before running the installer and launcher
        • Running the installer as an administrator
        • Running the launcher as an administrator
      • Installing in different locations (C:, where the OS is installed, and X:, a data drive)
      • Fix Xbox networking
      • Updates
        • Check and install Windows Updates
        • Check and install newer graphics drivers
      • Restart the computer (I do this daily, so it's occurred probably a dozen times since I started trying to fix this issue, plus the times I've restarted specifically to see if it changes anything)
      • Copy the launcher installation and the contents of .minecraft over from another computer and then starting the launcher
      • Update the installed Java 8 JRE
      • Modify services
        • Ensure that Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Networking Service, and Gaming Services services have the correct Startup Type
        • Restart those services before reinstalling and starting the launcher
      • Check internet speed and connectivity, both of which have been sufficient (upwards of 100 Mbps up/down and usually several times that)
      • Submit a support ticket (and they referred me to the Jira after their suggestions didn't work)

Note: whenever I uninstall and reinstall the launcher, I completely remove Minecraft installations and delete .minecraft/.

Finally, the behavior I'm describing appears the same as the issue I mention above, but it is not resolved, and I do not think this is a duplicate issue.
