I had oak wood planks and iron ingots in my inventory.

I opened the crafting table GUI.

As always, the recipe list had the items I could craft first with gray backgrounds and then the items I can't after that with red backgrounds.

I crafted sticks with my oak wood planks.

Items that could be crafted with sticks and iron ingots (tools, weapons) had their background changed to gray, but they were not moved to the top of the list above items I can't craft.

As a workaround, toggling the Craftable toggle to All and then back to Craftable updates the list so all craftable items are at the beginning of the list and with gray backgrounds.
