Not sure if a glitch or intentional.

In 1.16 (pre-Caves & Cliffs Part 1), I put berry bushes atop a strip of dirt blocks so I could harvest them without damaging my armor.

Now in 1.19.81 every initial approach damages my upper body, so was wondering if the player hitbox has changed?
