I was attempting to name my wolf/dog but the name tag isn't placing onto the mob. I tried on my horse as well & still will not name.  

Correction: on the horse it appears that they are named but the name will not show unless your in the horses inventory. Since the wolf/dog does not have an inventory you name it but can't see the name.
