I broke a cobbled (yes, cobbled, I didn't even place it and no one could join my world because it was on Beta) right on top of lava, I tried to break the other one and died and stayed there for a little bit until everything burned up including my xp and the block was slowly but surely breaking with no particles showing, it could've broke but it didn't, instead it just stopped breaking at the last second. That's all.
