before 1.2 beta we could use few worlds made by the cummunity to have custom flat worlds such as air world or sand stone worlds for Redstone but in 1.2 its broken and it will generate regular flat world unless you go to level.dat file and edit a value that was recently added to turn a regular flat world to a custom one but it will break if you try to share the world
