In the XBox 360 and XBox One Editions we are able to hear mobs (monsters and animals alike) as they approach you - both by walking sounds and by the noises they make. In the new cross-platform edition you hear them when they are a good distance away from you, but you only know you have been approached because you are attacked (or blown up) from behind. This goes for mobs swimming too - there are no (or possibly UBER quiet) splashing sounds.

Yes - I have the sounds turned on and the volume at the default level.
