      Well, For me this happens:

      1. Place sign
      2. Type Letter
      3. Crash.

      OR

      1. Place sign
      2. Crash

      This has been going on for me ever since signs came out.( 0.6.0 and so on..)
      Its more often in creative, but does happen in survival.
