I came across an idea to test boss item drops when I read one of the tips on the loading screen that said “Did you know Nether Stars are blast-proof?” or something like that. I discovered that fire will destroy both a dragon egg, the single rarest block in the game, and a nether star. Cactus can destroy both. Lava will destroy both. Explosions can also destroy a dragon egg. I feel like this is more of an oversight than a glitch.

How to replicate these oversights:

Throw a dragon egg into lava. Throw a nether star into lava. Note how they are both destroyed.

Throw a dragon egg onto a cactus. Throw a nether star onto a cactus. Note how the nether star is destroyed.

Etc.
