I was trying to prove to my friend that staring at the face of an enderman was not required to make it agressive. However, to my surprise, and contrary to all dedicated Minecraft wikis and officially sanctioned info books, the enderman did not get aggresive until the crosshairs made contact with the face. I am inclined to believe that this is a bug.
