droppers will send items through soul sand but not if there is water on top of the soul sand.  Can still use if the dropper sends items to the side into the water that is sitting on top of soul sand, but would require many farms to be completely rebuilt to accommodate the additional 1 block that would be necessary to make this work.  Items that dropper sends up through soul sand completely disappear when there is water on top of the soul sand.
